Make your own way to Crete where we'll transfer you to your hotel. You'll meet your travelling companions over a drink and dinner this evening.
Join this morning's walking tour of Chania, the second-largest city on Crete and discover the cross shaped market, the leather market, the elegant Venetian harbour and its lighthouse. The afternoon has been left free for you to spend as you wish. Perhaps make your way to the Old Town and explore the many side ways and shops.
Enjoy today at leisure, or why not join your Tour Manager and Local Guide on our excursion to the fascinating ruins of the Minoan Palace of Knossos. Built on the slopes of Kefalas Hill, this important archaeological site was, according to legend, the seat of King Minos. It covered an area of 22,000 square metres, was built over several storeys and featured a maze of corridors, sanctuaries and hundreds of rooms. Knossos is also connected with the Minotaur – a mythical beast with the head and tail of a bull and the body of a man, which was entrapped in an intricate labyrinth here.
Next, we head to Heraklion, Crete's capital city. Highlights include the Old Town's fortified walls, Venetian and Turkish fountains and many monuments dating back to the Middle Ages. During free time perhaps enjoy a spot of lunch before shopping for souvenirs. The city is also home to an archaeological museum which houses unique treasures unearthed in Knossos.
Spend this morning at leisure, exploring at your own pace. This afternoon we'll enjoy an included cookery lesson at a village taverna. Here we will learn how to make the traditional dish of moussaka along with Greek salad, stuffed vine leaves, tomatoes and peppers. The food that we have just prepared will be served to us for dinner this evening.
An optional excursion today gives you the chance to discover Crete's famous White Mountains. Topped with snow during winter months, they retain their white glow in the summer as the sun reflects off their limestone peaks. The mountains boast many dramatic gorges, the most famous being the Samaria gorge, and high plateaux including the Omalos Upland Plain. We will ascend this on a scenic drive past traditional farms and colourful orange groves, with a dazzling variety of wild flowers dotting the landscape.
We also visit the mountain Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete on today's tour. Here we'll discover a stunning variety of plants, flowers and trees from all over the world. Numerous types of butterfly are attracted by the colourful blooms, and many species of bird.
After breakfast we'll head off on a day of exploration at the fascinating archaeological site of Ancient Eleftherna. Stop for a quick visit at the Commonwealth War cemetery before we finish the day in nearby Rethymno. This beautiful city is dominated by a fortress and as you explore you'll see Venetian and Turkish influences in its picturesque harbour, soaring minarets and domed mosques. This evening, we'll gather as a group and head to a restaurant for dinner.
Located in the Akrotiri Peninsula, the impressive monastery of Ayia Trias is our destination today. Inside we'll see a large collection of woodcarvings and icons in its museum and a library which is home to some rare books. The monastery produces excellent wine and olive oil, and we'll head to the cellars for a wine-tasting before we have the chance to purchase souvenirs. On our way back to the hotel, there's another chance to shop with a stop at a local market.
Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your vacation before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

Crete - The Palace of Knossos and Cretes capital Heraklion
Make the most of your time in Crete and experience the magnificent Minoan Palace of Knossos. Excavations led by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans in the early part of the 20th Century revealed the enormous wonder dating from around 2000 BC.
According to Greek mythology, it is said that Theseus had slain the Minotaur in the labyrinth here below the palace.
After the visit of Knossos, you will visit the vibrant Crete capital city of Heraklion. Here you can take advantage of the fantastic shops or take the opportunity to explore the Heraklion museum, which is home to an interesting range of Minoan pottery and gold artefacts.
