Our included excursion this morning takes us to the medieval city of Tarragona, the Spanish capital of the Roman Empire. During our guided tour we'll visit the UNESCO-listed Tárraco archaeological site to see well-preserved Roman ruins including an amphitheatre, city walls and forum.
Our final stop is the city's spectacular Romanesque and Gothic cathedral before we head back to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure.
Enjoy a free day to spend as you wish. Your hotel’s excellent facilities include outdoor and indoor swimming pools and a sauna, and the golden-sand beach is within easy walking distance, so maybe just relax and soak up the sun.
Set between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of Montjuic, the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is our destination today. Its architectural treasures span more than 2,000 years of history, and we'll begin our tour as we discover the remains of the Roman walls surrounding the Gothic Quarter, which is home to the city's huge cathedral. After a stop to enjoy our included packed lunch, we'll have the chance to admire the unique and distinctive architecture of Antoni Gaudí. The Sagrada Familia is perhaps his most famous work, and this gigantic basilica, with its soaring spires, is simply awe-inspiring.
Enjoy a leisurely day in Salou today. Alternatively, we offer an afternoon excursion, which is a must if you are a lover of the Spanish dry sparkling wine, cava.
We'll head to the famous Codorníu cellars, one of Spain's oldest family businesses, where we'll learn about 450 years of wine production. Our audio-visual tour will take us through the estate on a trackless train, and then we'll head underground to the cellars, where we'll taste two cavas from Codorníu's premium range.
Today you may choose to join our optional excursion to the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet. Founded in 1150 by monks from France, the monastery was closed down and abandoned in 1835 during the reign of Isabella II of Spain. In 1940, it was refounded and today 27 monks reside in this UNESCO-listed site, which has a 12th century church in its centre.
We'll return to our hotel to enjoy an afternoon at leisure.
There's more time today for you to relax on the beach or enjoy your hotel's facilities. As you are located right in the heart of Salou, you could choose to head into town with your travelling companions to explore at your own pace or shop for some last-minute souvenirs of your holiday.

Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet
Discover the history and tradition of Catalonia on this half-day excursion. Departing Tarragona by coach, take the inland road through the village of Valls and over a mountain pass to the Francolí Valley, dominated by the region's capital, Montblanc. You will then head to the village of L'Espluga de Francolí to visit Poblet monastery. The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet is surrounded by a beautiful forest and is the largest Cistercian monastery in Europe. So impressive that it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery received special protection by the Catalan kings until the early 19th century, when the monks were forced to leave under the laws of ecclesiastical dispossession. The monastery then fell into a state of disrepair, but a restoration project began in 1940, returning the structure to its former glory and the pride of Spain.
Half day – moderate walking – historical interest
Cava Codorniu in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia
An exciting journey into the origins of the cava: Codorniu is synonymous to the history of a family of winegrowers which dates back to the XVI century and produces several distinguished vintages, especially their sparkling wines. It is the oldest family company in Spain and one of the oldest in the world, with more than 450 years of history to date. Cavas Codorniu were designed by the Art-Nouveau-Style architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch; the building was declared National Historical-Artistic Heritage in 1976 and is also one of the most incredible examples of the architecture dedicated to the elaboration and aging cavas. This fabulous half day excursion also includes a cava tasting.
