Itinerary
Make your own way to Munich, where we'll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in the Ammergau region. After time to settle in, get to know your travelling companions over dinner at a restaurant this evening.
Today we'll take to the road and drive to the Tyrol, our base for the remainder of our holiday. On the way we'll stop at Innsbruck for a treasure hunt. We'll discover the culinary and cultural highlights of the city in a very special way and, during the treasure hunt, a Local Guide will point out interesting sights. The Golden Roof is perhaps the most famous landmark. Sitting above a balcony, it was created for Emperor Maximilian I at the beginning of the 16th century, and still bears 2,657 original fire-gilded copper tiles. After free time to make your own discoveries, we'll continue to our hotel, where dinner is served this evening.
After a leisurely morning, we'll travel down the Inn Valley to Jenbach and board the Achensee Cog Railway, which dates back to 1889. The steam engines operating on the railway are some of the oldest in the world used for public transport. We'll admire views of the Inn Valley as the train winds its way up the mountain for around seven kilometres, finally reaching Lake Achen. This is the largest Alpine lake in the Tyrol, and we'll take to the water for a scenic cruise before enjoying a stroll along the shore.
This evening after dinner, we'll get together and head out on a torch-lit walk.
Today's excursion takes us to the historic city of Bolzano, famed for its delightful old shopping arcades. Enjoy some free time to explore with your travelling companions before we continue our journey along the South Tyrolean wine road to Lake Caldaro. Surrounded by vineyards, this is the warmest lake in the Alps, perfect if you fancy a dip!

THE HISTORY OF THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY
In the year 1633, the tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau was in the terrifying grip of the Great Plague. At that time, the villagers vowed that if their community was spared, they would stage a play every 10 years about the suffering of Jesus Christ. It’s a tradition that’s been upheld for more than 380 years, and in 2020 the Passion Play will be performed for the 42nd time.
AN EPIC PRODUCTION
The play takes place on a huge open-air stage against the stunning backdrop of the magnificent Bavarian Alps. The auditorium is completely covered and offers seating for almost 5,000 people. Around 2,000 amateur actors, musicians and technicians are involved and by law, they must all have lived in Oberammergau for at least 20 years. Telling the story of Christ’s passion, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration, the play features music written in 1815 by school teacher Rochus Dedler. It’s an epic production, with performances starting at 2.30pm, and finishing, after a threehour interval, at around 10.30pm.
