Itinerary

Make your own way to Munich, where we'll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in the Ammergau region of Germany.

After breakfast, we'll head to the village of Oberammergau and you'll have the morning to explore with your travelling companions. You can discover more about the Passion Play and the region's history of wood carving at the Oberammergau Museum. Lunch will be served prior to the performance, which starts at 2.30pm, and we will enjoy dinner during the three-hour interval. The Passion Play will finish at around 10.30pm when we will take you back to your hotel.

Today we'll take to the road and drive to Soll, our base for the next five nights. On the way we'll stop at Innsbruck, the Tyrolean capital, for a tour. In the company of a Local Guide we'll see the highlights of this charming Alpine city, including the famous Golden Roof. Sitting above a balcony, it was created for Emperor Maximilian I at the beginning of the 16th century, and still bears 2,657 original fire-gilded copper tiles. Enjoy some free time to make your own discoveries before we head to our hotel, where we'll gather for a welcome drink.

Our sightseeing today takes us on a scenic trip around the Wilder Kaiser, or Wild Emperor Mountains, and the Kitzbühel Alps. We'll travel through the towns of Walchsee and St Johann in the Tyrol, before arriving in the famous Alpine resort of Kitzbühel. Spend some time wandering through the charming cobblestone streets before relaxing on a horse-drawn carriage ride. Later we'll head to the medieval town of Kufstein, which lies on the border with Bavaria. The mighty Kufstein Fortress overlooks the town from a hilltop position, and houses the Heroes' Organ, the largest free-standing organ in the world.
Tonight, we'll get together for dinner and a traditional Tyrolean folklore evening.

This morning we're heading to the medieval walled town of Rattenberg. Known for its glass works, we'll visit a showroom to see the artisans at work and have a go at blowing our own glass bowls. Afterwards we'll visit Alpbach, a delightful little place which, with its traditional architecture and floral displays, has been voted the most beautiful village in Austria.

Our sights are set on Salzburg today, where a 'Sound of Music' city tour will introduce us to the movie's historic sights and filming locations. Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Palace and the impressive Mirabell Palace Gardens are just some of the highlights we'll see. We'll enjoy lunch together in a restaurant, and afterwards you'll be free to explore with your travelling companions before we return to the hotel.

You've some time to relax this morning before we travel to Lake Achen, where the views of the Inn and Ziller valleys are simply breathtaking. There's the option of a scenic boat cruise on the lake if you wish, and afterwards we're going to the Kramsach Farmhouse Museum. There are 14 farmhouses at this open-air museum, along with an array of other buildings including a mill, a blacksmith and a chapel. Whilst we're here you'll have a chance to bake your own bread and then we're going to the Tyrolean Schnapps Museum in Pill. We'll take a tour and learn how this traditional Austrian drink is distilled, before enjoying a tasting at the end of our visit.

At the end of your tour, you can join your fellow travellers on a transfer to the airport or choose to make your own arrangements.

THE HISTORY OF THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY
In the year 1633, the tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau was in the terrifying grip of the Great Plague. At that time, the villagers vowed that if their community was spared, they would stage a play every 10 years about the suffering of Jesus Christ. It’s a tradition that’s been upheld for more than 380 years, and in 2020 the Passion Play will be performed for the 42nd time.

AN EPIC PRODUCTION
The play takes place on a huge open-air stage against the stunning backdrop of the magnificent Bavarian Alps. The auditorium is completely covered and offers seating for almost 5,000 people. Around 2,000 amateur actors, musicians and technicians are involved and by law, they must all have lived in Oberammergau for at least 20 years. Telling the story of Christ’s passion, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration, the play features music written in 1815 by school teacher Rochus Dedler. It’s an epic production, with performances starting at 2.30pm, and finishing, after a threehour interval, at around 10.30pm.
