Day 2 Furnas

Today we’ll enjoy a full-day excursion to the region of Furnas, located in a beautiful valley bursting with flora and fauna. Our first stop is at a tea factory, a living museum, where machines from the 19th century still function. Later, we’ll stop to admire the beautiful views at Pico do Ferro Belvedere before continuing to Furnas Village, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. Lunch is included at a restaurant in the village, where you’ll have the opportunity to try 'Cozido das Furnas', a typical dish of the region. It consists of different meats and seasonal vegetables, cooked in a pot underground.
This afternoon, we’ll visit Terra Nostra Park, a splendid botanical garden which is home to thousands of species of plants and trees all set in the lush surroundings of the valley. The rhododendrons, hydrangeas and ferns are particularly splendid, and the warm mineral springs are known for their therapeutic qualities. You may even want to take a dip in the natural hot water pools. Meals included: B,L

Day 3 Ponta Delgada - at Leisure

Today you are free to enjoy a day at leisure in Ponta Delgada. Alternatively, if the weather is on our side, you could join our optional whale-watching excursion. More than 20 different species can be found in the Azores, and we’ll discover more when we attend a brief talk, before boarding a boat and heading out in search of these majestic animals.

Meals included: B,D

Day 4 Ponta Delgada

This morning we’ll enjoy a walking tour of bustling Ponta Delgada. We’ll pass through the city gates and visit the Church of Sao Sebastiao, the city’s main place of worship. Originally built in the 16th century, the church was substantially altered in the 18th century to reflect the Baroque style of architecture popular at that time. Next, we’ll visit the local market and browse the many stalls selling flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and local handicrafts. During our tour, we’ll also have plenty of time to shop for souvenirs and explore the city’s narrow cobblestone streets. Meals included: B

Day 5 Sete Cidades

This morning, we'll journey to the belvedere of Vista do Rei for panoramic views of the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. Legend says that these sparkling emerald and sapphire lakes were formed from the tears of a princess and a shepherd who were forbidden from marrying. There will be plenty of time here to take photographs and admire the scenery. Next, we’ll stop at a Manor House and then continue onto a pineapple plantation to discover how this luscious fruit is grown, cultivated and harvested.

Meals included: B,D

Day 6 Nordeste

Today we’ll discover the natural beauty of Nordeste, the northeastern region of São Miguel. Blanketed by trees, this part of the island features an abundance of green vegetation which contrasts sharply with the blue waters of the ocean. Our first stop will be at Santa Iria where we’ll admire sensational views of the coast. We’ll then see the watermills, waterfalls and lake of Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Park. This afternoon, we’ll call at tranquil viewpoints before discovering Povoacao, the village where the island’s first settlers landed.
Meals included: B

Day 7 Ponta Delgada - at Leisure

Today is free for you to explore Ponta Delgada, either independently or in the company of your fellow travellers. Why not relax in one of the many bars and restaurants or soak up the atmosphere of the busy marina.
Alternatively, we offer a morning excursion to see the stunning Lagoa do Fogo crater lake. On the way to our viewing point, we'll stop at Lagoa village where we'll find out how the typical earthenware of the region is produced. We'll then wind our way along the south coast to Pico da Barrosa and the Lagoa do Fogo belvedere for magnificent views over the turquoise waters of this immense lake, which is one of the largest bodies of waters in the Azores. Occupying the caldera of the Agua de Pau Massif, this is the island's youngest volcano at a mere 15,000 years old! Our final stop is at Ribeira Grande, where we'll visit the Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela and the Eduardo Ferreira liqueur factory, where you can enjoy a tasting of a variety of fruit liqueurs.
This evening, we’ll gather as a group to enjoy a farewell drink and dinner.
