Libearty Bear Sanctuary

As part of our Balkan Explorer adventure, you’ll be able to spend time at one of our latest Just You Cares projects, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in the village of Zarnesti, Romania. It’s the biggest brown bear sanctuary in the world and is home to over 100 bears.

Run by The Millions of Friends Association, the project is subject to strict animal welfare priorities, this sanctuary is certainly not a zoo but a haven for bears that have been treated badly in captivity and now have a second chance.

You’ll enjoy the memorable opportunity of meeting rescued bears as they roam free in 69 hectares of oak forest.

Until these bears were rescued, some of them didn’t even know what it was like to climb a tree, to hide from the sun on hot days, or the simple pleasure of enjoying deeper water for a bath. This sad existence is one of numerous stories of mistreatment, including the bear that inspired it all, Maya. You can read more about her story here.
